シー・オブ・ウィズダム～知恵を持つ海 （サクソフォン・オーケストラ版）

2007年に作曲してから、17年以上の時が流れました。今作は和歌山県の南紀白浜の景色を題材にしており、これまで多くの方々に演奏していただき、演奏者それぞれが描くさまざまな海の表現を聴かせていただきました。作曲者にとって、これほど幸せなことはありません。

そして今回、Adam Saxophone Quartetの皆さんによって、サクソフォンアンサンブル版を演奏していただく機会をいただきました。編曲をしてくださったのは、私のレッスン生である梅田詠侍さんです。素晴らしい方々によって新たな価値を加えていただき、感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。新たな《シー・オブ・ウィズダム》をどうかお楽しみください！（清水大輔）

サクソフォン8重奏版に続き、サクソフォンオーケストラ版も出版頂ける運びとなりました。Adam Saxophone Quartetの企画の依頼から始まった編曲ですが、こちらはサクソフォンだけでなんと16パート。「サクソフォンオーケストラ」「ラージ」などと言われる編成です。特殊管のためソプラニーノとバスはオプション扱いにしていますが、例えばB.Sax.2と同じ音域でも2種類の楽器で演奏するほうがより豊かで音楽の幅が広がるでしょう。

加えて、パーカッションパートもオプション扱いですが、パート数が多い分8重奏版に比べると動きを演出するのが少し難しいと思いますので、リズムを演奏する打楽器を積極的に取り入れてみるのがよいでしょう。原曲の吹奏楽版で演奏される動きをたくさん盛り込んでありますが、再現しようとするのではなくこの編成ならではのサウンドをぜひ見つけてみてください。（梅田詠侍）

清水大輔(Daisuke Shimizu)

1980年、神奈川県生まれ。2002年に昭和音楽大学短期大学部を卒業。作曲を藤原嘉文氏に師事。

サクソフォーン奏者・福本信太郎氏のための書き下ろし作品をはじめ、航空自衛隊中部航空音楽隊、陸上自衛隊東部方面・中部方面・第2・第4・第6・第8各音楽隊、海上自衛隊東京・横須賀・舞鶴・呉・佐世保各音楽隊、ヤマハ吹奏楽団浜松、なにわ《オーケストラル》ウィンズ、大阪市音楽団（現 Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra）、日生劇場、シエナ・ウィンドオーケストラなど、多くの団体から委嘱を受けている。

アメリカ・シカゴで行われる「ミッドウェスト・クリニック」やWASBE（世界吹奏楽協会）をはじめ、アメリカ、ヨーロッパで自作品が演奏されている。近年ではアジア諸国でも自作品演奏会の指揮や初演を行う。また、これまでに自作品集5枚を全国発売している。

SEA OF WISDOM FOR SAXOPHONE ORCHESTRA

It has been over 17 years since I composed this piece in 2007. Sea of Wisdom was inspired by the scenery of Nanki Shirahama in Wakayama Prefecture. Over the years, many musicians have performed this piece, each expressing their own interpretation of the sea. As a composer, nothing brings me greater joy than hearing these diverse renditions.

Now, I am honored to have Sea of Wisdom performed as a saxophone ensemble version by Adam Saxophone Quartet. The arrangement was done by my student, Eiji Umeda. I am deeply grateful to these wonderful musicians for bringing new value to the piece. I hope you enjoy this new interpretation of Sea of Wisdom! (Daisuke Shimizu)

In the summer of 2024, Mr. Okuno from Adam Saxophone Quartet approached me with the idea of performing this piece on saxophone, which led to the realization of this project. Initially, the plan was only for a performance, but thanks to the support of Fostermusic, the arrangement was published as well. It is now available for musicians everywhere, and I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude.

Following the publication of the saxophone octet version, we are pleased to announce the release of the saxophoneorchestra edition as well. This arrangement―originally commissioned by the Adam Saxophone Quartet―features an impressive 16 independent saxophone parts, a setup often described as a “saxophone orchestra” or “large” ensemble. Because of the specialized instruments involved, the sopranino and bass saxophone are marked as optional; nevertheless, even when they share the same range as (for example) Baritone Sax 2, performing the line on two different instruments will enrich the sonority and broaden the music’s expressive palette.

The percussion part is also optional, yet given the larger number of saxophone lines, it can be slightly more challenging than in the octet version to create a sense of motion. Actively incorporating rhythm instruments can help. Many of the gestures from the original windband score are folded into this arrangement, but rather than trying to replicate those effects verbatim, please explore the unique sonic possibilities of this instrumentation.
