"Alegria" means joy or delight in Portuguese.
Portuguese and other Westerners are famous for their emotional expressiveness. When they see someone else who is laughing, angry, or worried, it is almost impossible for them to leave him or her alone. They will offer words of encouragement to make the person feel better as much as possible, and in times of joy, they will never forget to say "thank you" no matter how trivial something is. This piece was composed to directly capture the feeling of joy as experienced by these people.
The piece opens with a lively introduction reminiscent of cheerfully vibrant footsteps, followed by a middle section that evokes a calm feeling of joy that is blessed with kindness from the heart, before closing with a fastpaced, energetic final section.
