Cobh, a major port in Ireland, was responsible for dispatching around 2.5 million of the 6 million immigrants who had settled down in North America between 1848 and 1950.Annie Moore, who had left Cobh with her two younger brothers for the United States, was the first person to disembark from SS Nevada, the ship they had boarded, and be welcomed as the first immigrant to the United States by the new immigration station on Ellis Island, New York, on January 1st, 1892. It is said that she was presented with a $10 gold coin by the director of the immigration station to commemorate the occasion, which also happened to be her 15th birthday. A monument of Annie Moore and her two younger brothers can be found at the port of Cobh, from which they had departed.
