いつか訪れたいと思っていた願いが叶い「無言館」をようやく訪れることができたのは2017年夏のこと。長野県上田市の豊かな自然に包まれた小高い丘の上に、戦没画学生慰霊美術館「無言館」はひっそりと建っていました。そこには第二次世界大戦により描き続けることが出来なかった画学生の遺作や遺品の数々が展示されています。

1945年第二次世界大戦の敗戦以来、80年間戦争をしていない日本ですが、次第に戦争を知らない世代が増え、過去に悲惨な戦争があったことすら忘れ去られようとしています。決してふたたび戦争を引き起こさないために今を生きる私達がすべきことは何なのか。それを、美術館の遺作と遺品の数々が物語っているようでした。

1．無言の叫び　Silent Scream
８月の暑い日の午後、「無言館」の重い扉を押し開け、薄暗くひんやりとした館内にゆっくりと足を踏み入れると、志半ばで戦地へ赴き、再び生きて故郷の土を踏むことのできなかった若い画学生たちの、無言の叫びが聞こえてくるようでした。

2．若き兵士の夢　The Soldier's Fleeting Dream
年老いた親、結婚したばかりの若い妻、まだ見ぬ我が子を郷里に残し、戦争に駆り出されたたくさんの若い画学生や画家たち。兵士となり、戦場で過ごした夜に見た夢はどんなものだったでしょう。戦地へ赴いた若き兵士はみな、生きて再び絵筆を握ることを願いつつ、しかしその願いが叶えられることはありませんでした。

3．明日への祈り ～いとおしき君へ～ Prayer for Tomorrow - For My Dear One -
戦場で散った若い命は、何故、何のために失われなければならなかったのか。美術館に展示されている遺作、遺品の一つ一つに添えられている言葉を読むと、そこには確かに若き画家の溢れる思いがあったことを実感できます。この戦争が終わったら必ず平和が訪れる、とそのことを願って若い命は散っていったに違いありません。（2025年5月・高嶋圭子）

高嶋圭子(Keiko Takashima)

香川県高松市生まれ。広島市出身。

4歳からピアノを始め、中学高校時代では部活動で合唱に熱中。高校二年より和声学・作曲理論を学び始め1982年東京藝術大学音楽学部作曲科へ。卒業後の1987年、パリ・トロンボーン四重奏団初来日の際にアンコールピースとして「夕やけこやけ」「わらべうた」を提供して以来、トロンボーンに関わる作品が多い。

トロンボーン四重奏のための「パスピエ」「メモリーズ」「スクエアダンス」「古都三景」「出逢いは、はじまり」「ふるさとのうた」「四季の詩」「ハナミズキの祈り」「砂の丘を越えて」など、またトロンボーンとピアノのための作品として、ミシェル・ベッケ氏のソロアルバムにも収録されている「幻想五木の子守唄」をはじめ、ソナタ「風花賛礼」「夜の静寂に」「春の呼ぶ声を聞く」などがある。合唱曲としては、落語を主題にした「時そば」（混声合唱）、女声合唱組曲「京都の恋（詩：黛まどか）」「花だより（詩：高橋うらら）」など。ピアノ曲としては「ピアノ発表会物語」がピティナ・ミュッセ（インターネット上の楽譜配信サービス）にて好評配信中。

1998年に広島で行われた国民体育大会では、開会式・閉会式のファンファーレを作曲。一般社団法人全日本ピアノ指導者協会正会員。

AT THE MUGONKAN - MEMORIAL MUSEUM FOR ART STUDENTS FALLEN IN WAR

It was in the summer of 2017 that I was finally able to realize my longheld wish to visit Mugonkan. In the city of Ueda in Nagano Prefecture, on a small hill enveloped by abundant nature, there quietly stood Mugonkan Memorial Museum for Art Students Fallen in War. On display were numerous posthumous works and personal effects of painting students who were unable to continue their artistic endeavors due to the Second World War. In Japan, which has not engaged in war for 80 years since its WWII defeat in 1945, generation after generation has no experience with war, and even the fact that tragic wars occurred in the past is close to becoming forgotten. What should those of us living today do to ensure that we never cause wars again? The works and personal effects in the museum seemed to speak to this.

1. Silent Scream

On the afternoon of a hot August day, pushing open the heavy door of the Mugonkan and slowly stepping into the structure’s dim coolness, I felt I could hear the silent screams of young art students who went to the battlefield without achieving their ambitions and who were never again to set foot on the soil of their hometowns.

2. The Soldier’s Fleeting Dream

Elderly parents, new young brides, children not yet seen... Leaving these behind in their hometowns, many young art students and painters were driven to war. Spending nights on the battlefield as soldiers, what sort of dreams might they have had? All of the young soldiers who left for the battlefield had hoped to live and once again hold a paintbrush, but that wish was not granted.

3. Prayer for Tomorrow For My Dear One

Why, toward what end, did young lives strewed across the battlefield have to be lost? Reading the words accompanying the posthumous works and personal effects on display in the museum, one feels in each the overflowing emotions of the young painters. They no doubt gave their young lives while embracing a hope that peace would surely come when the war had ended.
