This piece was composed in 2018 as a work commissioned by Vive! Saxophone Quartet and premiered at their 16th recital held in June of the same year. My aim was to compose a piece that possesses both agility and power which can showcase the technique and dynamism unique to a saxophone quartet, as well as the range and tone of the instruments.
"Passione," the title of the piece, means "passion" in Italian and is often used in musical terminology such as in "con passione," a directive to perform a passage with emotion and passion.
While the performance of this piece demands energy and a sense of urgency, its precise rhythmic demarcation of common time from triple time as well as its use of notation such as grace notes, staccato, and slurs requires musicians to be meticulous with the detailed articulation of its passages in order to create music that is imbued with both passion and calmness.
At the same time, by striving for a sense of unity between all 4 musicians while showcasing each individual's technical qualities and maintaining a vibrant tempo throughout, the rendition of this piece can be raised to an even higher level.
