The original piece is a work that was arranged for the legendary trombonist Michel Becquet when he visited Japan in 1987 and said that he would like to perform a Japanese piece.
The "Lullaby of Itsuki" is a lullaby that has been handed down from generation to generation in Itsuki Village of Kumamoto Prefecture. The word "lullaby" tends to bring to mind an image of parents singing to their child and lulling him to sleep. However, this lullaby is not about that. Instead, it is believed that this lullaby was sung by young children who were born into poor families and sent to work for the families of rich merchants in order to reduce the mouths they had to feed. These children sang the lullaby as they babysat the children of the families they were working for.
"Odoma bongiri bongiri, bon kara sakya oranto, bon ga hayo kurya, hayo modoru..."(We will continue to babysit and serve our masters until Obon. If Obon comes sooner, we would be able to return home sooner. (I want to return home sooner...))
Whenever I hear this lullaby, I can feel the poignant sadness of its lyrics and melody. I hope you can listen to and perform this piece while imagining the times in which the lullaby was sung and the story behind it.
