It was said that after the Last Supper, Christ proceeded to Gethsemane, a grove of olive trees, and prayed in sorrow and anguish as he feared his impending crucifixion. After several hours, he became determined to accept the destiny from which he had tried to escape, which set off a chain of events that culminated in his arrest.
Although Christ lost his life subsequently, it was said that his deep prayers at Gethsemane the previous night caused him to be resurrected with the promise of eternal life. These events recounted in the Bible, including the resurrection of Christ and his prayers at Gethsemane, have also been retold through the paintings they have inspired.
This piece depicts the deep anguish of Christ, as well as his struggles, prayers, and resurrection.
